Munuki
Munuki means “the snake is up” in Bari. The area was still bushy and wild when the First Sudanese Civil War ended in 1972. Peace stimulated the influx of new arrivals in Juba and Munuki was surveyed, at the end of the 1970s, to accommodate them.
Nowadays it’s a mainly residential area, with wide and well demarcated roads and blocks, and a large market called Souk Lybia. It’s in this odd location – a market – that the South Sudan National Archives have found a temporary home, in a house rented by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, until they can have their own building.
Munuki is often shaken by the sound of gunfire at night. Armed robberies happen on a regular basis in the area.
